Also called pattern searching, this is used to search plain text.

Regular expressions (Regex) and grep

Pattern searching uses rules to describe what you’re looking for in text. Regular expressions provide a flexible language to define those rules—capture digits, letters, repetitions, choices, and more. Grep is a classic tool that applies those patterns to search through plain text and return the lines that match. That combination—regular expressions for the pattern and grep as the search tool—best fits the idea of pattern searching in plain text.

The other concepts are more limited or serve different purposes: string matching typically means finding exact substrings without the pattern flexibility; binary search is an algorithm for quickly locating items in sorted data; fuzzy search looks for approximate matches rather than strict patterns.
